主题:Which Japanese prefectures aregreenest? Insights from Input-output analysis (I-O)

Narita Daiju(东京大学)

简介:Professor Narita is an environmental economist from the University of Tokyo. Before the current appointment, he worked at Hokkaido University, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Research Institute, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (in Germany), and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT). He earned a PhD (sustainable development) from Columbia University, USA.His main research interest lies in the economics of climate change, in particular, theoretical and applied evaluations of economic costs on various aspects of climate change (including ocean acidification, damages of cyclones/typhoons, carbon dioxide capture and storage, and tipping-point risks). His research involves the application and examination of methodological frameworks of environmental economics, such as risk analysis and economic valuation of non-market ecosystem services, while it also deals with cross-disciplinary collaboration with natural scientists. He is engaged in research projects on environmental problems in Thailand, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Zambia under JICA and others.

Input-output analysis (I-O) is a form of macroeconomic analysis based on the interdependencies between different economic sectors or industries. I-O economic analysis was originally developed by Wassily Leontief (1906–1999), who later won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work in this area. The foundation of I-O analysis involves input-output tables. Such tables include a series of rows and columns of data that quantify the supply chain for all sectors of an economy. Industries are listed in the headers of each row and each column. The data in each column corresponds to the level of inputs used in that industry's production function. This method is commonly used for estimating the impacts of positive or negative economic shocks and analyzing the ripple effects throughout an economy. During the talk, Prof. Narita will introduce Input-output analysis (I-O) and discuss recent developments Recent papers by Prof. Narita’s team published in the Journal of Cleaner Production and Sustainable Production and Consumption will be discussed further to understand the application of input–output analysis for the evaluation of environmental footprints of Japanese prefectures.. The talk will conclude with an overview of the Graduate Program on Environmental Sciences (GPES) at the University of Tokyo and a Overview of Management and Policy group at the university of Tokyo along with a brief overview to the Prof. Narita’s research group’s future research directions.
